Tariffs complicate relationship with U.S. ethanol’s top customer Canada

There are concerns politics could disrupt U.S. ethanol exports to its top customer.

American Coalition for Ethanol senior vice president Ron Lamberty says for more than two years Canada has been the top export destination for U.S. ethanol.

“They wouldn’t have any of that ‘what about food versus fuel?’ They didn’t have all that in there, they just looked at the economics of it. And their policy that they had was non-denominational, it was just whatever gets us to that target we do it.”

Speaking to Brownfield at the ACE Conference in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, he said the trade relationship has become complicated.

“Probably because of the tariff discussions. You’ve got domestic content regulations being passed in some of the provinces, and because of that I think you’ll probably have a national one.”

Data out this week showed ethanol exports at nearly five-month highs, and Lamberty says that could be because countries are preparing for further tariffs.
