MALTA Mont. – The buzz is back in Malta. The Mustangs aren’t just returning as the defending Class B champions — they’re returning as the team that went undefeated in 2024, capping off a flawless run to the state title.

But instead of feeling like they’re at the top, Malta says they’re still chasing.

“It was a spectacular year last year, but this year we’re just thinking we’re still underdogs,” junior guard Kenan Labrie said. “We lost some good kids last year, but we just have to fill those spots and continue to see glory.”

The Mustangs know every opponent will bring its best this fall — and they welcome that challenge.

“They’re going to come in and try to give you their best shot,” Labrie added. “And we kind of want that. Everyone’s best shot makes us better.”

For senior linebacker Straud Sims, the pressure of being the defending champs isn’t a burden it’s motivation.

“I don’t feel the pressure,” Sims said. “I like that teams are coming at us with the target on our back. It makes you want to step up and prove yourself every game.”

For the Mustangs, it all comes down to focus and being ready for whatever any given opponent throws at them.

“Always mentally be ready. Coaches always say, don’t eat the cheese,” Sims said. “You start basking in your glory when you start winning games. You think you’re too good, and that’s when teams will get you if you’re not ready.”

Malta will have new faces in key positions, but plenty of experience returns to lead the way.

“We bring back three starters on the offensive line, and they’re a year bigger and older,” assistant coach Aaron DeVries said. “We’ve got skill guys returning at wide receiver, and Trooper Styles stepping in at quarterback. Our identity will reveal itself as the season goes on.”

For now, the program is fueled by excitement — not pressure.

“The end goal every year is win our conference, qualify for the playoffs, win a first-round game, and keep building,” DeVries added. “We’ve done it once, so let’s go prove we can do it again.”

The Mustangs open their title defense August 29th at home against Huntley Project.
