The final week of NFL preseason action is here, with everything wrapping up by Saturday night.
The Pittsburgh Steelers and Carolina Panthers start things off, but fans won’t see Aaron Rodgers play at Bank of America Stadium. Head coach Mike Tomlin said earlier this week he’s liked what he’s seen from Rodgers during training camp and joint practices, enough so that he’s comfortable with Rodgers not taking a single snap in preseason.

Rodgers has only played one preseason game since 2018 anyway — though it was in 2023 with the New York Jets, as he was incorporating himself with a new team. The Panthers aren’t playing Bryce Young or any of their starters Thursday night either.

One notable player who will play Thursday night? New York Giants rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, who’s impressed in preseason and took first-team snaps in joint practices with the Jets earlier in camp. He could push starting QB Russell Wilson sooner than later, considering he offers more upside than the accomplished but aging Wilson. We’ll see how Dart looks in his final preseason action against the New England Patriots.
Speaking of the Patriots, rookie second-round pick TreVeyon Henderson has been turning heads, first with a 100-yard kickoff return for a touchdown to open preseason and then with a 5.0 yards-per-carry average and touchdown run in limited work against the Minnesota Vikings. It’s unlikely he’ll play Thursday, as the starters aren’t expected to face the Giants, but he’s still a reason for optimism as Drake Maye looks to take a big step forward in his second year as a pro.

Shedeur Sanders will play in Browns’ preseason finale: After an oblique injury kept him out of the Cleveland Browns’ second preseason game, Shedeur Sanders is set to take the field this weekend. Browns head coach Kevin Stefanski told reporters on Thursday that, barring any injury setbacks, Sanders will be the team’s third-string quarterback on Saturday, as Cleveland takes on the Los Angeles Rams in their preseason finale. Flacco, who was named as Cleveland’s starting quarterback earlier this week, will start in Saturday’s game. Rookie Dillon Gabriel will be the QB2, followed by Sanders.
Jerry Jones talks Micah Parsons negotiation: Dallas Cowboys team owner and general manager Jerry Jones appeared on Fox News Thursday and was asked how close the Cowboys are to getting a deal done with Micah Parsons. “He knows more than anyone that it’s a team thing, and, so, I know everybody’s tired of hearing this, but you’ve got to put this puzzle together so that you can have some other people out there playing with Micah,” Jones said. This comes a day after head coach Brian Schottenheimer said he believes Parsons will play in Week 1.
Shedeur Sanders not sweating Dillon Gabriel’s “entertainers” quote: Shedeur Sanders was asked Tuesday about the “entertainers” and “competitors” quote fellow Cleveland Browns rookie quarterback Dillon Gabriel dropped last Saturday during a preseason game against the Philadelphia Eagles. “Honestly, I don’t even think about anything. Words or anything, you know at this point, can’t do anything to me,” Sanders said Tuesday. “… I spoke with him. He told me on the plane. He came up to me and was like, ‘Nah, bro, that wasn’t at you. I see how they trying to spin it.’ I’m not gonna lie, I’m not tripping, regardless of whatever it was. Nobody’s words or anything affects me.”
Spencer Rattler will start Saints’ preseason finale: New Orleans is home to the last unresolved starting quarterback situation in the NFL, and second-year QB Spencer Rattler will start Saturday’s preseason finale, per head coach Kellen Moore. Second-round rookie Tyler Shough, who started Week 2, will get the ensuing reps, and third-year pro Jake Haener will get the rest. This seems to give Rattler the inside track on opening the regular season as the starter, but a good performance from Shough might convince Moore to go with him.
