Does anyone have any experience of this in Dublin or anywhere else? Is it possible to live on your own on minimum wage?

  1. Its a stupid post. He compares **average** rent to **minimum** wage. You should either compare average rent in Dublin with average income in Dublin, or minimum reasonable rent in Dublin with minimum wage in Dublin.

  2. As the other person said, someone earning **minimum** wage is not going to be paying the **average** rent in Dublin.

    >Is it possible to live on your own on minimum wage?

It would be extremely difficult. You could find a studio, but you’d be paying a huge chunk of your wages on rent.

  3. from “Fact checking legend” Tony Groves Twitter

“Avg rent now beyond minimum wage. It’s no wonder we spend €1bn a year on HAP & Rental Subsidies. This is wealth transfers from the bottom to the top and it will not be tackled by current policy.”

  4. “*Ah now Mr Reilly, you are not supposed to live on your own while you are on minimum wage, what kind of world do you think we live in, you are expected to share with 3-4 other people, or live with your mum and dad, what other sticks can we use to squeeze more from people”*

  5. Obviously he shouldn’t be comparing average rent to minimum wage,

but it’s pretty disgusting that the average rent is more than what a fulltime minimum wage worker makes in a year. That’s the real fucking issue.

  6. I’ve done it back when minimum wage was €18,622 for 37.5 hours in 2018 or so. Fucking horrible. Was renting a shit hole but only for €420 a month. Extremely bad on mental health wouldn’t recommend

  7. Definitely not in Dublin.

I live in Tipperary and so does my sister, and we both lived on our own (me for 1 year, my sister for 5) on minimum wage, as we were both eligible for HAP. We had decent enough apartments – 1 bed each with kitchenettes rather than kitchens, but not studio apartments by any means. More than enough for just 1 person.

Now my sister still lives in that same apartment, but pays the full rate of rent (€500-something/month) because she got her Master’s and has a much better job. I have a different apartment, because I got offered full-time housing by Focus Ireland. I have a differential rent set-up (rent is scaled to my income) and pay about €28 per week (€113/month)

  8. Its clear that high rents are having a large impact on minimum wage workers in urban centres, just look at the difficulties that small business, restaurants and hotels are having trying to attract staff. It simply isn’t possible for people earning low wages to live or even commute to urban centres while on such wages. Either wages have to go up or rents have to come down.

  9. Lads, you are obviously not getting up early enough to make Leo’s quota.

    Just stop being poor.

    Also

If you make less than 100k, stop thinking FG have your back. They really don’t

  10. I don’t have friend who live there that don’t earn at least 45k/ year and they barely get by. I cannot imagine how it would be to live there on minimum wage.

  11. If you aren’t a Dub or a tourist..Dublin is the most unwelcoming place in Ireland. Place has gone to the dogs. Such a shame

  12. Averages are useless when dealing with these sorts of stats. Wages are skewed by the lads earning stupid money and rents are skewed by the lads charging stupid amounts. Use median values instead.

Even still, you’re not living on your own in Dublin on minimum wage.

  13. I’m not paying that or close to that average rent in Dublin, and I’m not on minimum wage, and I’m still barely managing to survive! It’s some fucking con job this work to barely live bullshit.

  14. My rent in Dublin was €1400 a month. And I was taking home about €1700-€1800 a month. You could do it, but you’d have a pretty shite existence if you weren’t sharing or in a relationship.

  15. If I was making minimum wage and didn’t have to pay any taxes, with my current rent I’d have 850 a month to live off. My apartment is small, not in a great area, and old. It’s simply not possible.

  16. Is that a serious question? Of course it’s not possible. Unless you happen to have a granny flat in a house with a sound landlord that isn’t trying to make massive profits, but those kind of cases are few and far between

Or you might be able to pay the rent but you’d starve to death fairly soon after

  17. Serious question, are there any capital cities in the west where a person can live on their own on minimum wage?

  18. It’s not enough outside of Dublin either. Where I work they have to house employees in order for them to be able to work for minimum wage. So they pay 60e rent out of their weekly wage but share a house with a few other workers. It’s the only way possible for us not to be short staffed.

  19. Wife and I moved to Dublin because her work wants her in the office a few days a week. She’s an accountant and I’m a software developer. Our rent is about 5,000 more than this average per year and she had to have a conversation with work to today to tell them that being in the office 2+ days a week is simply not viable because of the cost of living in Dublin

  20. Comparing minimum wage with average rent seems misleading no? You’d expect someone on an average wage to be able to afford the average rent. There’s obviously a massive issue with housing at the moment but I feel like we’re not comparing like with like here?
