90s rave crew DiY Sound System: ‘We definitely sacrificed our sanity’

  1. I just finished this and it’s a fascinating read. I lived in Nottingham through the 90’s and my younger brother was part of the traveler/site/free party scene at the time, so I was aware of DIY (I still treasure the copy of Strictly 4 Groovers from ’93 that my brother gave me). I was fully in “building my career” mode at that point in my life and, tbh, my brother’s lifestyle was a million miles away from my conventional life. But, hey, I’ve always loved the music at least.

  2. Whenever I could I’d always go to any club/field/quarry to see DiY in whole or in part. True legends.

    RiP whoosh

  3. I was big into the free party scene in the 90s. I have such conflicting memories. On the one hand great youthful memories of belonging to an exciting underground tribe filled with ideologies of anarchy, progression and peace and nights of hedonistic pleasure. On the other, elitest scenesters, drug issues, anti social behavior, mental health problems, gang problems and occasionally death.

If I could do it all over I’m not sure if I would be a raver or not although I still love me some good dnb and techno every now and again.

  4. Yeah. DIY and later smokescreen were a big part of my history too. I’ve bought Harry’s book but not had the chance to read it yet.

    RIP Pete Woosh

  5. Fuck me, that brings back memories. I remember getting paid in acid by one of the DIY tech crew to look after the generators in a quarry rave back in the very early 90s.
