PSA – if you see a cartoonishly dead-looking sheep during lambing season, she’s probably just super fat and needs flipped over, otherwise they can die a painful death. saw this sheep a few weeks back and if my partner hadn’t just read about the phenomenon, we wouldn’t have known to save her life.

as we’re nearing the end of lambing season, hopefully there won’t be too many more sheep this year in need of being flipped, but do keep this in mind going forward and keep an eye out when driving past any fields of sheep.
here’s some media coverage about us going sheep-flipping to hopefully help raise awareness and save more sheep! (never in all my days did i expect anything i’d be up to would be covered in “farming life”) –

That one didn’t need much assistance.
TIL. Fair play.
It can also happen cattle.
Yea. Wife’s the same.
Good on ye,in fairness not many people would go to the trouble.
The fact that you’ve posted this in four different subs and have put the same comment with the media coverage of your “good deed” in all four really makes it seem like your goal is to get attention for your partner who just so happens to be running in an election, rather than some sort of sheep wellbeing PSA.
I have a farming friend who impressed his city girlfriend by spotting a sheep in the same predicament while driving in the country, stopped the car, went over to the sheep and got it on its feet again.
At one point in life I was the helpful wife and currently I am the sheep
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: if ever an animal existed just to be eaten, it’s a sheep.
Good on ya. Growing up on a far mwith sheep this could happen quite often and even aside from them dying, crows or magpies would peck out their eyes even while still alive. One thing to note is if they’ve been there a while is they’ll be staggery/dizzy when they get up and might fall again. Also they’ll pee straightaway once they get up too.
“No garda! I was just flipping her back over when you arrived”
I had to do a couple of nights of lambing, and that was enough forever. Sheep need a lot of patience
Poor sheep, I just did this last week visiting my family farm. Spotted a sheep two fields away and we have some binoculars at the house, so confirmed it and went to push her over. The same sheep had 3 lambs a few days after, so she was carrying a lot of weight. Worst thing is when the sheep are like this, birds can come and pick at their eye or stomach. We had some one eyed sheep throughout the years because we got there too late. If they picked at the stomach though, it’s much worse as they get a serious infection from that.
Yeah my friend has to go out on his quad every now and then to flip them over lol. It happens when their wool gets full of water
You have to do the same for turkey chicks, just in case anyone decides to raise one for the christmas dinner.
*Prevents animal from dying in pain*
*Eats babies*
Probably went to a restaurant after this and ate some meat. Great job
Should have rolled her the other way.
But good on ya girl
I feel bad for saying this but it’s kind of funny when they wriggle about on the floor while you roll them over…
Fair play.
Some tips on form, don’t grab the legs as they can give you a nasty kick.
It’s simpler and safe to give them a shove with your foot, the only really need to make it about halfway over and they’ll be grand.
If you notice there’s dung behind them or can spare the time, wait around for a few minutes as their balance can be off for a bit after getting back up and they can tumble again quickly
Sorry for the gruesome thought but if they are damaged by birds (eye missing or guts pulled out) if you can stomach it, check for breathing. I’ve had to put a ewe down mangled but still alive. The right thing to do is inform the farmer or someone near the field who might know whose sheep they are, its a better fate than being left to the birds
Sure they’re going to die anyways.
So, is it actually okay to go onto someone else’s land if an animal is in trouble like this?
2 years ago one of the sheep behind my house managed to get some wire caught around her neck. She was stuck and the more she pulled, the tighter the wire got. I’d say the passersby had a good look at me sitting on top of this sheep trying to untangle the wire while she tried so hard to escape. lol
Only he was my neighbour and I’ve been asked to look after his cows a few times, Im not sure if I’d be confident to go onto someone’s land.
Is it legal here?
Or is it a matter of just not being seen?
Go you, by the way. 👏
This was actually helpful to know as I live in the countryside. Dammit they are so cute aswell.
The fat baaaastards. 🐑
Yep. Crows will pick their eyes out.
My friend send me a Snapchat of a ewe on here back with the caption. “Having the time of her life”. He tought she was rolling around like a dog.
Oh I been there, son. I been there.
