Czechia is preparing for its annual Castle Night on Aug. 23, when over 120 castles, chateaux, and historic monuments across the country open their doors after dark. The event, running from 7 p.m. to around midnight, allows visitors to explore historic sites in a unique evening setting.

In Prague, highlights of the occasion include the gardens beneath Prague Castle, Wallenstein Palace, and Invalidovna, featuring torchlit guided tours, live music, and costumed storytelling.

As displayed in our infographic below, the structures are famous Europe-wide and indeed around the world: for several reasons.

Czech castles are particularly notable for their long history and strategic roles. Many date from the ninth to 13th centuries, built under the Přemyslid dynasty as border fortresses, royal seats, or administrative centers.

🏰 Czech castles: Fast facts

Central Bohemia has the highest density of castles nationwide, while several have gained international recognition: Český Šternberk and Bouzov Castle have appeared in Hollywood films, and Trosky Castle has grown in popularity through the video game Kingdom Come: Deliverance II.

Beyond their architectural and historical importance, castles are a major driver of tourism. In 2024, a total of 4 million visitors toured the castles, châteaux, and monuments managed by the National Heritage Institute.
