    Calling for hotels full of people to be set on fire isn’t advocating violence?

  21. Just some actual context for everyone who thinks she has done nothing wrong from the case’s published Sentencing Remarks:

    – The tweet in question read “Mass deportation now, set fire to all the fucking hotels full of the bastards for all I care, while you’re at it take the treacherous government and politicians with them. I feel physically sick knowing what these families will now have to endure. If that makes me racist so be it.” By the time she was arrested, she had deleted the account, after it being viewed 310,000 times.

    – The police traced other tweets she had sent before and after the publishing of the above which included further racist remarks.

    – The day before she was arrested, she sent the following WhatsApp message: “..raging tweet about burning down hotels has bit me on the arse lol”.

    – Messages also stated that she would deny responsibility if arrested and “play the mental health card”.

    She absolutely knew what she said was racist and wrong. She’s just a bigot who refuses to take any personal responsibility because her ignorance cannot comprehend the fact that other people don’t agree with her and would not have acted the same way.

  25. I think that if this had gone to trial, any half decent lawyer could have easily demonstrated that “for all I care” meant that she felt indifferent about it, not that she was inciting it.

    The woman was stupid, but I really find it troubling that she spent a year in prison for an ill-judged tweet sent in anger.

    She’s going to become a real martyr because of this and even as someone that believes strongly in the rule of law, I can totally understand why.

    The fact she was denied bail was equally ridiculous and clearly a tactic to terrify her into admitting guilt rather than to protect the public.
