COLD BROOK, N.Y. — The Poland Joint Fire District announced that the Barneveld and Newport fire departments will primarily cover its area following a recent separation from the Poland Volunteer Fire Company.

NEWSChannel 2 has learned that following a meeting on Tuesday evening, it was determined by the Poland Fire District that it would sever ties with the Poland Volunteer Fire Company, and at midnight, it could no longer respond to calls.

The Barneveld and Newport departments have more than 35 interior certified firefighters and 20 emergency medical technicians, according to a press release from the Poland Joint Fire District.

The departments are also equipped with 16 swift water and ice rescue personnel and specialized training for rescuing trapped firefighters during building collapses.

Residents of Poland are currently without a local fire department following a decision made by the Poland Fire District.

The departments are prepared with ATVs and UTVs for off-road rescues and have five National Certified Fire Instructors.

“County 911 coordinators are aware and have a support plan in place provided by supporting agencies,” according to the Poland Joint Fire District release.

Also, depending on location, Deerfield and Remsen fire departments will assist.
