Because they’re a bunch of racists? That’s my bet.
Unfortunately we have a government who are trying to erase anything positive to do with Māori / they clearly think parents and children are too stupid to have more than one language in books which is devastating considering how many countries around the world speak more than one language
Because, at least as an outsider, it really looks like a small subset of the population holds an inordinate amount of power and then when people try to make things more equal for New Zealanders of all heritage they throw a fit like what happened in Parliament a little while ago.
It’s because we currently have a government that is deeply racist and is willing to do things that appeal to those kiwis who hate anything Maori. That includes de-emphasizing Maori names of state and public institutions. Reordering how English and Maori appear on NZ passports. Scrapping public bodies intended to reduce the inequities Maori experience. And legislating a specific interpretation of the Treaty of Waitangi so as to reduce protections for indigenous rights.
The current government is basically trying to roll back and undo all the progress made over the last 50 years regarding Maori.
Children are far better at language acquisition then adults. It is easier for children to pick up Maori words then adults so this isn’t going to confuse them.
