Hungary hasn’t been part of the Eurovision Song Contest since its withdrawal, after the 2019 contest, and since then, there have been no news regarding Eurovision from the country, not even any rumours about a possible return.
Despite the official explanation regarding the withdrawal from Eurovision 2020, a great amount of people, both in and out of Hungary, say that this is an action of Orbán’s ultra-conservative government. MTVA, the country’s public broadcaster, said at that time, that they would rather support the local talents that will come out of A Dal (the contest that the country used as a national final for Eurovision) and that they would use the whole budget that was supposed for the Contest, in this action.
Back in the present, Hungary is a little less than a year away from its Parliamentary Elections in April 2026, with Viktor Orbán and his conservative party, Fidesz, having dropped to 39% in the polls.
On the other hand, the Leader of the Opposition Party, Péter Magyar (member of the European People’s Party) and his centre-right party, Tisza, have risen to 46%.
With the coming elections in mind, Péter Magyar was part of an open Q&A in which citizens could ask him questions about his program, and the Eurovision Song Contest was one of them.
In detail, a young man stated that health and education come first, but he doesn’t see any talk about Eurovision inside the party, as he thinks it’s a topic of great interest to many. Magyar’s answer was positive:
“I don’t know if it’s the government’s responsibility, but if it is, we will do it.”
Then the man explained how big of a platform Eurovision is for artists, mentioning the examples of Carson Coma and Abor & Tynna, who tried to participate in Eurovision through San Marino and Germany respectively. Finally, he pointed out that it must be made clear that Hungary is neither absent for financial reasons like Bulgaria and Romania, nor excluded like Russia and Belarus, to which Magyar replied:
“It’s wrong that we do not participate and we shouldn’t have withdrawn. I agree with Russia’s exclusion, we shouldn’t allow any war criminal to participate. So this is what will happen. If it’s in the hands of the government, we will go on with it.”
