It will disable the door lock until it is reset using a special key.
No ways you thought “oh no I’m locked in this building, let me post on Reddit and wait for the answer”.
It will need a specific key to reset and bought set off intruder alarm.
Why not call someone
Does the vehicle entrance not open on a sensor? I’d try triggering that and walking out the massive gate.
Just open the door?
No in my experience, it will just release the door lock. In my uni, the plate was loose, and we would just press it to get out after hours.
Ex Maintenance man here… no it will not break anything, it’ll just release the door magnet and let you out. It will need to be reset after the fact but so long as you log it with your building Maintenance person or fire warden, they’ll be able to reset it
If you use the emergency open then Security will have a key to reset it
At my work, pressing this would just release the magnetic lock holding the door shut. It will remain unlocked until someone resets it though so you should inform maintenance/security if you do press it so they can reset it
What’s the door look like? If it’s a regular door with a mag plate holding it, the break glass will cut power to the plate and open the door. Just needs a plastic key inserted to reset it or the call point alarm replaced if it’s the smashy glass type. This looks like the resettable type.
However… if the magnets are well attached to the frame and the door and you’re big enough, you can probably shove it open without causing any damage.
It won’t break anything, it’ll just need to be reset after.
Really not a big deal, so just press it.
Look from underneath- there will be two small holes which if you press a key/stick whatever into will put it into test mode and it will open without breaking the plate,
No, easily resettable with a small plastic key, not from the outside though. Just turns off the magnet.
Thumb of rule is -> Green does not trigger the emergency protocol (alarms and all), red does. Usually that one exists to cut the power on electrically/magnetically locked doors when buttons, and usual means (fobs, cards) are not working properly.
Are you oit now?

Is it related to London?
The break glass unit cuts power to the door locks when pressed, releasing them immediately. It also sends an alert to security, and for automatic doors, it signals the door to open.
The yellow bar type used here is plastic and can be reset after use. Some models use real glass, which must be replaced each time and spares are not usually kept on site.
Oh, I think I can add a bit more to the answers bellow.
First: This buttons are there for that exact reason. You are stuck and with no way out.
Second: When you press the panel in the middle a square piece of plastic will break exactly in the middle and disable the magnet holding the door.
Source: I actually pressed one by mistake (it was in a busy environment and there were no plastic cover on top). And I actually sold those panels when I was working in a electronic shop. They are quite cheap and they are sold in bulk.
Edit: Someone pointed out the color of the button. Green shouldn’t trigger the alarm.
