Finland is looking into the possibility of bringing Palestinian children in need of hospital care to the country.

Speaking to Yle on Sunday, Prime Minister Petteri Orpo (NCP) said that the plan would concern a small number of children.

He stressed that evacuating minors from a conflict zone is complex, and the matter is still under review. The plan would possibly involve dozens of children.

“If we have the chance to help in this way, we will,” Orpo said when speaking to the press during the prime minister’s traditional question hour on Yle Radio 1.

Orpo also said that Finland is calling on Israel to cancel its new settlement plans.

He stressed that Finland is closely involved in efforts to promote a two-state solution in the region, though stopped short of saying whether Finland would recognise Palestine before an upcoming UN meeting.

Orpo said he is open to Finland signing a France- and Saudi Arabia-led declaration on Palestine by 5 September, outlining steps toward a two-state solution with Israel. He noted, however, that there are divisions within the government on the issue.
