my ancestor moved to America in the 1860's, our original surname was "oppen", I was told it meant "hill" essentially "from the hills", just tried to look it up and found nothing, any help is appreciated friends!

    From what I can tell it basically refers to a place that is slightly elevated from the rest of the area, not necessarily a hill but above something else of significance, like another estate/farm.
