A nanny job in London pays £18phr and more. That’s £430 pw. Even at 25hours a week that’s still more than the £1200 they claim you’d be saving by living in their home in St Albans but I guess it’s absolutely fine as you get to live in a luxury 850k home. Totally not exploitation. What is wrong with people?
They want a cook, housekeeper and maid for FREE! Is this not slavery?

  1. The bit that kills me is “option of a small monthly salary.” Option??? So even the £600 isn’t guaranteed

  2. What they truly want is an au pair, but it doesn’t look like they have Au pair money…

  3. So you don’t pay rent but you also won’t have enough time to earn money at a proper job so you’re essentially just stuck with these weirdos…in bloody St Albans of all places not even London

  4. Oh man, this is giving me PTSD. I fell into this trap at uni and during the summer break. Worked for a very wealthy Italian family in London who spent the summer in their mansion in Sardinia/yachting. It was literally the most dysfunctional, hellish nightmare of my life (and trust me, I’ve seen a few things, haha). Modern day slavery fo sho – they lure you in with the trappings, then the whole thing is sheer exploitation. In the rich part of Sardinia I remember barely being able to buy a bottle of Pantene with my – * cough * you are multimillionaires – “optional wages” as everything was so inflated (it was like 20 euros). Having a (little) room in a mansion surrounded by island beauty don’t mean shhh when you’re surviving on 4 hours sleep in a completely dysfunctional environment, working illegally long hours with rich brats. When I said mid summer I was quitting and flying home they actually had to audacity to say “well, we will see you back in London then.” WHAT IS WRONG WITH PEOPLE! I don’t wanna pump a cliche here, but does money warp peoples’ brains or something?! End of rant. Thank you for the catharsis. Do not go and live with these people in St Albans, thank you.

  5. “Bedroom with its own bathroom……..shared only with the kids !” No way these people are being foreal?

  6. I love how they had to state the price of their house. Is that something people brag about to their friends? “I’m renting/staying in a 850k house, wbu?”

They sound truly insufferable and I hope no one takes them up on this. Could you imagine trying to discipline their kids?

Red flags all over the place

  7. witnessing the rebirth of the servant class. what a time to be alive.

  8. This is my job except I earned double and live in with no rent

  9. They also lock your room at night, but they do unlock it in the morning.

  10. Rooms in St Albans are not £1200 to rent, that’s fucking nonsense.

  11. Is this what mordern day indentured servitude looks like?

  12. I suspect that is actively illegal, quite apart from being exploitative.

Accommodation can be taken into account as part of a minimum wage payment but the amount is set according to some government numbers.

  13. These kinds of people always try and make their kids sound like such a delight that it’s a breeze to watch them rather than, you know, proper work.

  14. Funny how they’ve “already spoken to people excited about the chance” but the advert is still up, probably right bellends

  15. would you like to be an au pair but with no free time and no money?

  16. No, I will take the no salary option please 😂 who is picking that 😂

  17. Rick and Bianca?! Where do they live, Albert square?

  18. When I was an au pair back in the day, I got £75 per week “pocket money”, if something like this came up back then I’d def take it. The only way this is worth it though is if the kids are older and go to school, otherwise you never get any free time whatsoever. Considering the au pair job is pretty much (at least legally) dead in the UK these days though…. if they can afford that much money on a house they can afford a proper nanny lmao

“We’ve already spoken to people who were really excited about the chance” okay so why didn’t they take it lmao

  19. Fuck that, average house in London is £900k its a swindle.

  20. Funniest part of this posting is thinking that £850k gets you “luxurious” in St. Albans!

  21. Red flags: 1) flexing the house value 2) saying people are interested to create urgency. Written by someone as though they’re still in the office. Puke

  22. Putting the value of their house in the ad is giving me the ick

  23. St Albans is certainly not “near London” enough to be advertised as that. And £1200?! You can rent a 1 bed flat for that round there. Agreed not a massive one but definitely not the cost of a room there

  24. Isn’t 850k in St Albans just a regular 3 bed terraced? …

  25. OP, you seriously need to report them to whatever site they are using to advertise this. This is absolutely illegal.

  26. Home Counties resident here. I wouldn’t consider any house worth less than £2m to be luxury. Where we are (similar distance from London) I’d consider £3m and above as luxury. £850,00 is a average semi or a characterful end of terrace.
