The Belgian subsidiary of French telco Orange has revealed that it suffered a data breach that compromised the integrity of a large number of mobile phone accounts.
Orange Belgium says at the end of July it detected a cyberattack on one of its IT systems, resulting in unauthorised access to certain data from 850,000 customer accounts.
According to Orange, a hacker gained access to one of its IT systems containing the following data: surname, first name, telephone number, SIM card number, PUK code, tariff plan.
However, Orange claims no ‘critical data’ was compromised, saying no passwords, email addresses, bank or financial details were hacked.
“As soon as the incident was detected, our teams blocked access to the affected system and tightened our security measures,” Orange says in its statement.
“Orange Belgium also alerted the competent authorities and filed an official complaint with the judicial authorities.”
Orange claims that to date it has found no indications that the hacked data has been disseminated and that access to compromised system has been blocked.
The main risk for affected customers, according to Orange, could be from fraudsters impersonating Orange in phishing attempts.
“The affected customers have been or will be notified by email and/or text message,” Orange said.
“We advise them to remain vigilant for any suspicious communications.”
Orange has set up a dedicated web page for customers to get further information concerning the incident.
