Iran protests intensify as nationwide anger over blackouts, economic hardship, and executions targets regime
In the past week, a surge of protests has swept across Iran, fueled by crippling power outages during a scorching summer, dire economic conditions, and the regime’s continued use of executions to silence dissent. From major cities to industrial hubs, Iranians from all walks of life have taken to the streets, their chants increasingly targeting the foundations of the clerical regime and its supreme leader, Ali Khamenei.
The unbearable summer heat, combined with the regime’s gross mismanagement of the country’s infrastructure, has led to frequent and prolonged power and water outages, pushing citizens to their breaking point. In response, angry protests erupted in numerous cities.
Elaheh Fouladi: Political Prisoner’s Health Deteriorating in Qarchak Prison

Iran Ranks Third Globally in Extent of Land Subsidence
Amid ongoing warnings about land subsidence crisis in Iran, an official from the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development announced that Iran ranks third globally in terms of land subsidence, revealing that the largest subsidence zones in the country have been identified in Golestan Province.
Ali Beitollahi, head of the Earthquake Engineering and Risk Department at the Road, Housing, and Urban Development Research Center, warned on Saturday, August 23, that due to the severe depletion of groundwater resources, Iran is now among the top three countries in the world in terms of the “number of land subsidence zones.”
European Threat of Snapback Sanctions Escalates Amid Iran’s Defiance
According to a report by The Wall Street Journal on August 22, 2025, senior correspondent Laurence Norman assessed that the probability of snapback sanctions being reimposed on Iran is now “very high.” His comments came after the foreign ministers of France, Germany, and the United Kingdom held a tense call with Abbas Araghchi, the regime’s foreign minister. Despite Tehran’s vague verbal hints at extending the deadline, Norman noted that no concrete steps were offered by the regime.
The Associated Press reported on August 23 that the European trio’s threat to activate the snapback mechanism by the end of the month has heightened international concerns. The anxiety grew further after Tehran cut cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) following recent attacks on its nuclear facilities, blocking inspectors’ access to critical information on its stockpile of 60% enriched uranium—a level just one technical step away from weapons-grade. European foreign ministers and the EU’s foreign policy chief confirmed that a new round of negotiations is scheduled for next week.
