Lives torn apart by fatal crashes on the A9, Scotland’s longest road

  1. “80% of deaths and non-fatal collisions happen in the single carriageway sections”

Oh, you mean the bits with average speed cameras? Imagine that. Making it impossible to overtake safely increases frustration and causes accidents.

I’m honestly surprised the dual sections don’t have more, given everyone speeds like hell on them to overtake all the slow people that refuse to pull in/let people go past in the single sections. But I guess it just shows speed isn’t the problem here.

  2. >She was going to make a right-hand turn off of the A9, and she turned right in front of a lorry.

Doesn’t seem like the road is to blame here but driver error

  3. People need to learn to use lay-bys – also, I’ve pass people doing 30 just so they can take photos from their car!! Mental

  4. Always seems like the A9’s reputation as incredibly dangerous probably comes from some really wonky statistical work. It’s 250 miles long and is the only realistic option to get between central Scotland and the Highlands so it’s incredibly busy, of course there’s a lot of accidents. Fully open to someone with actual stats proving me wrong but if we looked at casualties per passenger mile like we do for aviation then I expect we’d see it’s a pretty normal road.

Edit to add: the examples used in this example are someone turning right in front of a lorry and another driver dying at the wheel before crashing, hardly the road’s fault in either case.

  5. The roads are fine if everyone has the respect for the roads, other road users and to themselves. Country roads/single carriageway roads have different types of users, farm traffic, lorries, cars etc. Always leave plenty of buffer time when you drive on these roads. Overtake only when you are 100% certain you can do so safely.
I drive on country roads all the time and it’s maddening how impatient drivers are. Tailing for no reason, overtaking in dangerous places etc etc.

  6. Yeah its lethal. Dual all the way should be a national priority.

  7. Also, she was foreign and on holiday…used to driving on the right on big American roads. This seems like driver error…tragic nonetheless and the road does need to be made into a dual all the way but foreign drivers cause deaths in Scotland every year and it’s very seldom the fault of the road.

  8. The BBC aren’t even hiding their bias anymore. Such a disgusting headline as well, done deliberately to get as many clicks as possible.
