‘Real government’ of senior officials are running Ireland – not representatives chosen by the people, Dáil told

  1. It’s because of this sort of fuckery that I get a good chuckle when people say that corruption is not an issue in Ireland

  2. Officials and to a lesser extent the cabinet. The Dáil is entirely toothless thanks to standing orders which allow the cabinet to ensure we don’t have “rebel” TDs like you would have in literally every other parliamentary democracy in the world.

  3. DUUUUUUURRRR, government come and go, civil servants are the ones doing all the work… when they feel like

  4. Governments around the world are no different. It’s the educated senior officials who inform and advise on policy, the eegits voted by the people don’t know their arse from their elbow. They’re just a face.

  5. What’s the process for sacking a senior civil servant? Mr Watt has gotten far too big for his boots, even government TDs are calling for him to be sacked. Who has the power to sack him, the Taoiseach?

  6. I have no faith in our government, practically all of the parties, but if those in power would like to wield more power or influence than they are currently able to then they should come out now and agree with the points raised in the article. Come out and say that the divide has grown too wide and we need to reimagine how our elected officials govern.

  7. The people we can’t vote out have been running the country since its foundation. That’s common knowledge.

  8. Government : The emotional punch bag of the people. Great for the people to direct their anger towards.

Wouldn’t want people following the money trail and finding out the real culprits now would we.

  9. Ahh to be a senior secretary, all of the power, full privacy, a big fucking wage to boot that will never go down, and on top of that gormless idiots of politicians you can use as shields.

  10. The number one priority of any bureaucracy is self survival. Galbraith wrote a short simple book called the Economics of Innocent Fraud on the matter.

  11. So you’re saying the Tánaiste and the Taoiseach are just figure heads?

We must bring this to the attention of the President, hopefully he will be able to sort all of this out.

  12. It’s why nothing really changes and the same old problems are with us for decades in housing, health, education, transportation etc. The puppets we vote are only PR figureheads, they need to be good with people , interviews and deflection waffle , but what they say is really irrelevant.
Thinking back to all the shite we hear and no notion of it ever being done.

  13. Well, yea that’s how it works. Imagine a person running a department with a multibillion budget and thousands of employees with no experience.

  14. We have amazing resources here and we can be self sustainable to a degree but the government has squandered everything for a quick punt/euro

No long term thinking here ever

  15. Robert how dare you question my pay Minister you little bollocks Watt has entered the chat. Everyone knows who these cunts are. Whatever happened to the social boycott..
