Putin’s “land swap” is really a grab for Ukraine’s fortress belt – he wants Trump to secure for him what Russia’s army cannot

   Putin wants Trump to force Ukraine to abandon its strategically critical “fortress belt”, a 30-mile (50km) line of fortifications that have been built with a massive investment over the past ten years.

   It would not only take Russia years to take the fortress belt but would be hugely costly in terms of casualties and resources. The idea that Ukraine could simply move its front line back and rebuild its defences is not viable as it would be enormously expensive and take a great deal of time. 

   Once in Russian hands the infrastructure of the fortress belt could in effect be turned against Ukraine.

3. right, I have no idea why publications like the guardian, bbc, etc gloss over this. it’s probably the most important piece of information about the negotiations given that russia has a habit of breaking its agreements and continuing the invasion anyway: **they’re asking Ukraine to give up all their defences**

4. The real question is can Ukraine secure the lands because the war won’t stop and people will did. If they take the land anyway what s the point of sacrificing men and resources 

5. How the mighty will fall this year. Trump can’t give what he doesn’t own. Ruzzia has a domestic energy crisis and Ukraine is increasing the distance and lethality of its long range fires.
