The Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM) has revealed that kit has received official proposals from five nations, including Canada and Russia, to develop nuclear power plants (PLTN) in the country.
“Their proposals are currently being studied. We have already met with Canada and Russia,” ESDM Minister Bahlil Lahadalia said at the Merdeka Palace, Jakarta, on Monday, Augustus 25, 2025.
He cited that the government has yet to decide which nuclear technology design it will adopt, as the evaluation process is still underway. “All designs are still being reviewed,” he added.
According to Bahlil, the government is carefully assessing the most suitable nuclear power plant model for Indonesia’s future energy needs. His statement follows earlier remarks from the Director General of New and Renewable Energy and Energy Conservation (EBTKE), Eniya Listiani Dewi, who revealed that six countries have expressed interest in building nuclear plants in Indonesia. These include the United States, Russia, Denmark, Canada, the United Kingdom, and China.
Meanwhile, state-owned utility company PLN has laid out its Electricity Supply Business Plan (RUPTL) for 2025–2034. The roadmap sets a target for nuclear power capacity of up to 500 megawatts (MW) within the next decade.
Under the draft Government Regulation on National Energy Policy (RPP KEN) and the National Electricity General Plan (RUKN), Indonesia’s first nuclear power plant is projected to begin on-grid operations by 2032 with an initial capacity of 250 MW. That figure is expected to grow significantly, reaching 7 gigawatts (GW) by 2040.
