  1. Great action if you want to look like you actually care without doing anything at all or doing something which would have actual consequences.

Edit: always interesting when people answer and immediately block you so you can’t answer anymore.

  2. excellent move France. Proving all the terrorists around the world that doing heinous terrorist acts is a good tactic to achieve objectives.

We are Charlie no longer valid apparently

  3. None of this matters unless they can enforce that recognition. Israeli settlers and soldiers still colonize and throw people out of homes and businesses and they will annex Gaza.

Any country that will recognize the Palestinian State needs to treat them as they treat Ukraine.

  4. Great way to show the world that the actions of Hamas earn legitimacy – terrific job

  5. ISIS was just too early it seems by that logic.

  6. The PNA, or Palestinian Government if you “recognize” statehood doesn’t have a current election process or any way off creating one. They had an election in 2006. Fatah lost to Hamas, then they started fighting. Hamas won that too and has controlled gaza since.

Abbas (pictured) is very old. If Fatah (his ruling party) tried to have an election, they’d lose. A nondemocratic transition would probably also “fail.” It would also fail to return Fatah to leadership and also fail to establish a stable, widely recognized successor.

The PA/PNA was created in the 90s as a “proto-state” to build governing institutions in advance of Palestinian sovereignty. A combination of ineptitude, corruption and kleptocracy has gradually hollowed out these institutions.

Foreign aid would (for example) fund the PNA’s energy ministry. The money would get stolen. Then the power would go out. The PNA would blame Israel and violence would break out. The foreign ministries providing aid tried all sorts of anti-corruption measures but nothing worked. They now just pay the fuel bills directly The pay for engineers to fix the stations. It’s the same for education, health, etc. Nothing the PNA control works. Even Fatah-supporting palestinians will admit this.

One thing the PNA does well is diplomacy, especially western-facing diplomacy.

I think the current effort to achieve recognition will succeed. I also think PNA actual existence in the West Bank will not last long. I can’t see it outliving Abbas. He’s 89. A lot of uncertainty ahead. It’s very hard to guess where this goes.

  7. Honestly this, like so much other pro-palestinian activism, just seems counterproductive.

The west giving Palestinians what they want doesn’t actually do anything to address the underlying issues that have caused and continue this conflict, unless you actually buy into the idea that Israeli’s are comically satanic.

To get to a good outcome you need to get both sides to the negotiating table, and apply enough pressure to each that they will accept compromises that lead to a lasting peace.

The Palestinians have always been their fair share of the problem in that regard, and recognition of a Palestinian state is a **huge** point of leverage that *could* be very effective in achieving change if it were utilized instead of just given away.

We’re trading the appearance of helping, for the outcome.

  8. Good – everyone should.

But we need to sanction the criminals too.

  9. Might as well, what’s one more islamofascist terrorstate

  10. So the actions of Hamas deserve legitimacy? Why not demand Hamas stand down in exchange for a recognition of Palestine?

  11. France was always going to recognise Palestine due to its domestic situation.

All states operate for their own self-interests, the French are masters at dressing this up as selflessness.

  12. On August eighth, the Arab League urged Hamas to lay down its arms. This offered a potential break through in the Middle East. But no; the cutie pie Lefties in France, Spain, Italy, and Ireland had to encourage Hamas to keep fighting, by offering to recognize a “Palestinian State”, without Hamas making concessions in return, like the return of all the hostages.

  13. Free Palestine of Hamas and Israel!

They’re just one Khomenei’s garbage terror groups that Khamenei took over, and the genocidal Netanyahu regime must be loaded with Russian spies

  14. If the world was just then I pray the Russian aggression continues to pester Europe so long as Europe supports Israel

  15. What Israel is doing is reprehensible.

But how can you recognise a Palastinan state where there is 2-3 potential governing bodies and undefined border. One of the governing bodies is Hamas, which obviously is never ever going to get the OK from Israel’s government and the other is the Palestininan Authority, which doesn’t have much in terms of media presence right now, at least internationally, but have historically not really been much better than Hamas and the third is attempting to have a new election without removing Hamas from the equation. PA also doesn’t have a election process and the current leader is very, very old.

  16. As if it would change anything. Just more empty words from the EU as usual.
