  1. Almost as sad as when dracula pulled out of the “no blood drinking” pact

  2. The history books will all cast Putin as a Hitler wannabe – and the countries helping Russia as another Axis of Evil.

  3. That’s understandable, because it cannot be enforced, since it’s a torture to live there.

  4. … Wait they were in it in the first place? The look of their prisoners of war makes you think otherwise.

  5. “Russia looks to pull out of Europe”

    Oh, good

    “Anti-Torture Pact”

    Oh

  6. Such an unexpected move. A terrorist state wants to torture people legally. Did legality ever matter to them tho?

  7. This is basically just Russian fear mongering. They already torture by default. This changes nothing – it is purely meant to spread fear.

  8. Thing is, they “pulled” out of it a long time ago, this is just for sending a message

  9. Any comment from from ex-chancellor Schröder about this, yet? No bs excuse for the “lupenreiner Demokrat” (flawless democrat) Putin?

  10. I mean, this is kinda good because it reduces the amount of ongoing hypocrisy in the world, so… yay…?

    — What is your name?
    — Jonn Smith.
    — What is your name?
    — Jonn Smith.
    — What is your name?!
    — Jonn Smith!

  12. Russian here.

Russia did abide by EU prevention of torture convention, because it doesn’t do what people think it does. It doesn’t ban torture, if you read the text (as tortures in Russian prisons have happened on a regular basis pretty much since 1991).

Instead this convention specifically creates an EU commission that can visit your penal colonies (prisons, asylums, etc), and can write reports about the state of them. And the prisoners can write their complaints to the commission too. That was the problem.

Here is an [example of a report they wrote after a visit in 2019](https://rm.coe.int/168097e388)

It did write its reports up until 2024, and the prisoners could still write complaint letters to the said commission. In an attempt to limit the EU influence, Putin quit both the Anti Torture convention and European Court of Hunan Rights jurisdiction, of course making the situation in Russian prisons and with human rights far far worse.

  13. They were only in it for show, seeing how they treat POW’s and even their own troops in the war with Ukraine not sure why they were in this pact to begin with…

  14. Enter the quote from discworld: we don’t do that because otherwise they will do it so it would be like doing it to our own guys.

  15. In practice, it makes no difference. Russia has always used torture.

On a higher intellectual level, it only further demonstrates how little culture and dignity the country possesses.

So, yeah, they are just doing their thing.

  16. They torture their own people. Why should They give a fuck.
