Physics World Focus on Vacuum Technology 2015

This focus issue kicks off with the latest pumping technology being developed for a future fusion power plant and then takes an in-depth look at the vacuum and surface science underpinning the redefinition of the kilogram. We report on a major vacuum upgrade recently completed at the UK’s ISIS facility, and on bespoke vacuum cells at synchrotron X-ray sources for exploring nanostructure. Finally, we describe a vacuum chamber designed to simulate the conditions on Mars, and look back on the history of vacuum technology as Pfeiffer Vacuum celebrates its 125th anniversary.
