  2. Understandable. Trump has done everything he possibly can to push India towards a better relationship with Russia, by “attempting” to force them to stop working with Russia. Who would have imagined threatening other nations with tariffs and sanctions could lead to worsened relations and trust? #TheArtOfTheDeal

  5. I really started to respect India recently. While the country has been backsliding slowly away from democratic norms, it has successfully charted a truly independent course among other major powers.

TL;DR: US President Donald Trump made at least four attempts to talk to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the phone in recent weeks, but the Indian leader refused to talk to him, according to German newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine. The Mainz-based newspaper of record suggests this to be the result of the “depth of his [Modi’s] anger, but also his caution”.

    I am not a fan of Modi, he has some hits, some misses, and one of them is this:

    He doesn’t talk to press. He makes speeches, and announcements, but no interviews* . And no Q&A press conferences. Eleven years, not one.

    This is because during campaigning, the press made a point of repeatedly pushing him on a dark, black, spot in his otherwise clean image at the time. The 2002 riots in his state.

    So he got pissed, and stopped talking to press. Not during campaigning, not for that year: FOREVER.

    So if he’s pissed at Trump and thinks it isn’t worth talking to him: I can easily see Modi deciding to cut all his calls. Maybe tell the External Affairs Minister (Jaishankar) to give it a go if he wants.

    *the business with Arnab Goswamy doesn’t count.

  17. It is the right move. Every leader that had a one on one discussion with Trump ended up with a terrible deal. Trump will probably start with a maximalist position and start issuing threats, if they are not met. No point in dealing with him personally.

    The only thing India can do is to absorb the pain from the loss of exports and wait for Trump to push the US economy into a recession. If that happens, they will be more receptive to a fairer trade deal. If that doesn’t happen then India just has to learn to live with the tariff, and look for other markets, just like the Chinese did during his previous term.

    One thing is certain, there is no way the Indian government is going to open up the agri sector as the Americans want.

  27. 50% tariff is technically challenging the China + 1 strategy.

    I could explain the China +1 strategy in deep but that’s boring. So let’s see what apple is doing. They are shifting the assembling of apple products to India from China. The iPhone manufacturing is contracted by taiwan companies like foxconn, pegatron etc. China produce battery, casing and a little bit of things and the rest is assembling. After the assembling of new version iPhone started in Indian plants Chinese govt called back their citizens to slowdown the exports to US.

    China sees companies like apple as a strategic leverage as rare earth metals. Even trump administration recognize this give tariff exemption to electronic exports from India. But doing the 50% tariff will result in returning the companies back to China .
