Jersey returned to winning ways in the ICC Cricket World Cup Challenge League A as they thumped Denmark in an 89-run victory.

The home side tied against Kuwait on Saturday but rolled over the Danes at the National Cricket Centre in Grainville, reaching 348 for 3 before bowling the visitors out for 259 in just 45 overs.

As the score suggests, it was a display of controlled dominance.

Batting first, Jersey’s platform was laid by opener Nick Greenwood, who anchored with a fluent half-century – which grew into 107 runs – before the innings was transformed by the arrival of Josh Lawrenson.

The 21-year-old all-rounder – who replaced the bowled-out Harrison Carlyon (4) – lit up the innings, knocking up 139 runs from 152 bowls (including 14 4s, two 6s) that kept the scoreboard ticking for his country and earned him Player of the Match honours.

With support from Greenwood’s replacement Zack Tribe (49 from 22) the Islanders surged beyond 300, punishing an increasingly ragged Danish attack.

The same could not be said for Denmark’s innings.

Wickets fell in clusters against a disciplined Jersey bowling unit, led by Dom Blampied (three from seven), two wickets each from Greenwood and Lawrenson and one from Carlyon.

At 150 for 6, the game was effectively gone, though spirited lower-order hitting took Denmark to 259 before last batter standing Shakeel Zeb (22 for 18) was bowled and caught out in the 45th over.

Lawrenson was the player who delivered that final blow and his skillset with both bat and ball in hand makes him a valuable asset for Jersey.

Already capped at Under-19 World Cup level, his blend of aggression and maturity will have been an exciting watch for director of cricket Paul Hutchison and Jersey fans yesterday as they build towards the 2027 World Cup.

They now sit atop of League A on 13 points and play Papua New Guinea on Thursday.
