August 27 – The Bulgarian government has given a BGN 2.2 million (€1.1 million) grant to First League newcomers Dobrudzha Dobrich to instal modern lighting at the Druzhba Stadium.

The Dobrudzha team has returned to the top tier of football in Bulgaria after a 22 year absence. Dobrudzha last played among the best in 2022.

In the first few rounds of the new season, however, Dobrudzha have not been able play at thei Druzhba Stadium. The stadium failed to receive a license from the Bulgarian Football Union, as it did not meet the mandatory lighting requirements. Dobrudzha have played their home matches at the Spartak Stadium in Varna.

However, this will no longer be the case. On Sunday, Dobrudzha have returned to their home, after earlier in the day, former Prime Minister of Bulgaria Boyko Borisov and President of the Bulgarian Football Union Georgi Ivanov broke ground for the new lighting at the Druzhba Stadium.

The construction will cost € 1.1 million, with the money being provided free of charge by the Bulgarian government. The project should be completed within three months.

“Football is played for the fans. The people of Dobrich deserve the city’s team of Dobrudzha to play in their own stadium. We have already provided 2.2 million leva, with which the stadium’s lighting will be repaired. With the joint efforts of the government, a lot of money is currently being invested in sports infrastructure. I hope for support from the Bulgarian Football Union as well,” said former Prime Minister of Bulgaria and leader of the GERB political party Borisov.
