Correios de Portugal (CTT) announced today the temporary suspension of parcel shipments and postal items containing goods to the United States, including Puerto Rico and other US territories.

The decision by CTT aligns with similar measures announced by postal operators across Europe, Asia, and Australia, all of which are adjusting to the end of the US de minimis. The exemption will cease to apply on 29 August 2025, requiring all incoming goods shipments to undergo customs clearance and payment of duties.

This measure comes in response to the decision by US authorities to abolish the long-standing “de minimis” tariff exemption, which previously allowed goods valued at US$800 or less to enter the country duty-free and without formal customs processing.

The suspension covers universal service parcels and international express products that include goods. However, postal items consisting solely of documents and gifts exchanged between individuals valued at less than US$100 remain unaffected and continue to be accepted for delivery.

CTT further clarified that customers may continue to send goods to the United States using CTT Expresso’s Premium International service, available to contractual Expresso clients. This service allows shipments up to 30 kg, with delivery and customs charges payable directly by the recipient.

“This is a temporary suspension, designed to safeguard customers and ensure compliance with new US customs requirements,” a CTT spokesperson stated. “We are working with international postal partners to implement the necessary changes and will resume standard parcel services to the US as soon as operational conditions permit.”

Correios de Portugal (CTT) is a modern, publicly traded company that has evolved far beyond its origins as the royal mail service founded in 1520. Operating one of the oldest business brands in Portugal, CTT now manages a nationwide logistics and delivery network that handles over a million items daily, while also expanding into financial services through Banco CTT.

For more information, including updates on service resumption, customers are advised to consult www.ctt.pt or contact their local CTT branch.
