A Republican from Oklahoma, U.S.. Representative is being mocked on social media for wildly claiming that the President of Recep Tayyip Erdoğan of Türkiye is trying to reestablish the Ottoman Empire and impose Sharia Law on the United States.
“You’ve got Sharia Law trying to be established in America today. The President of Türkiye has made statements relative to reestablishing the Ottoman Empire,” Rep. Josh Brecheen (R-OK) said at a town hall event on Tuesday.
Users on social media were quick to mock the absurdity of Brecheen’s claims, pointing out the fact that the Ottoman Empire fell after its defeat during World War I, dissolving into what would become the Republic of Turkey.

“I’m now totally freaked out that the Ottoman Empire is coming back to impose Sharia Law on America. I thought the West defeated them outside the walls of Vienna in 1683, but it appears they are back.” Ron Filipkowski, Editor-in-Chief of MeidasTouch, wrote on X.
“So, he has no problem with Trump imposing a dictatorship on this country, but is all in a dither about some conspiracy theory about Sharia Law being imposed on us?” user Russ Hjelm wrote.
“Imagine thinking a 600-year-old empire is plotting against you from beyond the grave,” user N1Fredy wrote on X.
“The only religious group trying to enforce their religious bigotry & ignorance on the rest of America is the White Christian Nationalists led by D. Trump and S. Miller,” user Mary McNeil wrote on X.
During the meeting, Brecheen discussed how President Donald Trump’s “One Big Beautiful Bill Act” will impact Oklahomans’ tax brackets and Medicaid. This got heated during the question portion of the town hall, as constituents expressed concerns.
The congressman faced disagreements and disruptions during the meeting, as emotions flared when residents questioned him about various issues, including Trump’s executive order sending the National Guard to Washington, D.C.
Attendees also expressed frustration at the time allocated for people to ask questions of the congressman.
“I didn’t like that. It was stretched out so long, and it didn’t leave very much time for questions at the end. And unfortunately, we weren’t able to ask our pressing questions,” Anna Stewart told local 2News Oklahoma.
