Merz: Germany will not recognize Palestinian state at UN General Assembly

German Chancellor Friedrich Merz said today that Germany will not join the Western allies’ initiative to recognize the Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly next month.
Merz made the announcement at a joint press conference with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, who last month announced that Canada plans to recognize the Palestinian state at the General Assembly, following similar announcements from France and the United Kingdom, Reuters reports, according to albinfo.ch.
“The federal government’s position is clear regarding the possible recognition of a Palestinian state. Canada is aware of this. We will not join this initiative. We do not see that the conditions have been met,” Merz said.
