I have cited a reputable news source for each key claim.
-
Harold Hamm; role and why Trump appeases him; Hamm is a longtime oil executive and top fundraiser who has acted as a point person between major oil donors and Trump, pressing for deregulatory, drilling-friendly policies and campaign support; Trump gives access, public-platform alignment, and policy moves that expand drilling and ease rules because Hamm raises large sums and coordinates donor expectations.
-
Kelcy Warren and Energy Transfer; role and why Trump appeases him; Warren is the billionaire behind Energy Transfer and Dakota Access Pipeline who has been a major Trump donor and host of fundraising events; Trump expedited or publicly supported pipeline projects and fast-tracked permits that directly benefit pipeline owners; this is classic access-for-policy reciprocity.
-
Carl Icahn and refinery/biofuels interests; role and why Trump appeases him; Icahn served as an informal adviser in 2017 while owning refineries that stood to gain from favorable Renewable Fuel Standard (RFS) waivers and regulatory shifts; Trump administration consideration of RFS policy and refinery waivers aligned with Icahn’s financial interests, producing conflict-of-interest scrutiny and apparent policy responsiveness.
-
American Petroleum Institute and major industry lobbies; role and why Trump appeases them; groups like API, IPAA and Western Energy Alliance lobby for methane-rule rollbacks, looser permitting, and federal land access; Trump administrations have repeatedly adopted or proposed rollbacks and rule changes that mirror industry asks, creating regulatory relief and lower compliance costs for members.
-
Big-oil CEOs, access, and fundraising meetings; role and why Trump appeases them; senior executives from ExxonMobil, Chevron, Occidental and other majors have been given access in meetings and were leveraged in fundraising contexts; the administration’s public messaging, regulatory reviews, and willingness to reverse Obama-era constraints are tied to maintaining donor and sector support.
-
Pipeline approvals and early executive actions; role and why Trump appeases pipeline investors; within days of taking office in 2017, Trump signed orders reviving Keystone XL and Dakota Access reviews and approvals; these early moves rewarded midstream investors and signaled policy priority for pipeline expansion.
-
Arctic National Wildlife Refuge (ANWR) and federal leasing; role and why Trump appeases drillers; Trump administration decisions to open ANWR coastal plain acreage and expand federal leasing represent direct expansion of drillable federal acreage favored by oil companies seeking new reserves.
-
Methane, offshore safety, and regulatory rollbacks; role and why Trump appeases operators; rolling back methane and some offshore safety or reporting rules reduces operators’ compliance costs and was publicly lauded by industry groups; such rollbacks follow explicit industry lobbying priorities.
-
Specific episodes illustrating quid pro quo culture; role and why Trump appeases industry; public reports of high-dollar dinners, direct asks for industry funding in exchange for policy favors, and media episodes invoking “call someone at Exxon” illustrate the expectation of access-for-policy within political fundraising culture.
-
Structural reasons this pattern repeats; explanation; big donors provide concentrated, predictable money and political muscle; oil and gas operations are regulated by many executive-branch rules where presidential direction matters; so political leaders seeking campaign resources and sector stability often prioritize industry access and deregulatory actions, producing repeated appeasements when donors organize and offer support.

Besides economical reasons and if course individual interests, the renewables (with one exception) are weather-dependent, non-plannable and therefore not suitable for the electric grid.
