1. Because capitalism cannot afford people to understand how massively important the livable planet is. It is easier to imagine the planet dying rather than capitalism 🫤

2. It’s important to note that paper this article is based on says that the tipping point may be reached between 2050-2070. Also the recent Baker paper suggests that while the AMOC will weaken, it will not collapse.

3. If they are publishing 2060, doesn’t that mean it’s actually going to happen much sooner?

4. The Gulf Stream can’t and won’t collapse. The AMOC might.

5. In Belgium it was all over the news for some reason.
   It has been known for a long time that this could happen and what the consequences will be.

   Also the research that pinpoint the date is quite “old” 9 months. The YouTube channel, Just have a think, made a video on this topic where the lead researcher Réne Van Westen was interviewed.

6. I believe the paper says under SSP2-4.5 AMOC would actually weaken about 30% by the end of the century.

   This is also by the same team who wrote about AMOC instability last year, so their may be some motivated reasoning behind their claim – one should wait for other scientists to confirm their interpretation of the data.
