LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The Michigan Senate has passed Senate Bills 360–364, a package of bipartisan legislation aimed at strengthening protections for Michigan consumers.
The bills focus on reducing data breaches by requiring companies that collect, store, or access personal information to implement stronger security measures.
If a security breach is suspected, businesses would also be required to investigate and notify affected consumers.
The legislation would grant the Attorney General’s office greater authority to investigate data breaches and hold accountable those responsible.
“With more and more data breaches happening here in Michigan and across the country, it’s imperative we take action to protect consumers from the very real threats caused by the misuse and exploitation of their personal information,” said Senator Rosemary Bayer. “As a victim of identity theft myself, I understand all too well the headaches, harms, and fear that comes with it, and I’m working to do everything possible to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone else.”
Currently, 37 other states require businesses to notify the Attorney General when a data breach occurs.
The legislation now moves to the House for further consideration.
