Israel presses Gaza offensive as ceasefire talks falter • FRANCE 24 English

The militant group Hamas says the plan shows Israel’s disregard for ceasefire negotiations. Joining me now from Jerusalem is Noga Tanaposski. No, what more do we know about Israel’s operation in and around Gaza City? Well, we know that today about 60,000 Israeli reservists did get those muchtalked about callup notices and there’s quite a bit of tension surrounding the question of how many are going to actually respond because among the reser who are not legally obliged. They’re considered volunteers uh despite the fact that the army leans on them completely as a fighting force. they’re not obligated and there have been there’s been growing critique of the war and the management of the war from the reservist uh classes. Um we also heard that the soldiers whose uh service was elongated by an extra month are conscripts the young soldiers who have no choice who are con drafted into the army. So that has become clear. I have not heard of a concrete military advance towards Gaza city, but Israel has begun issuing the evacuation notices. So, it really pushed up by, I would say, more than a month the expected beginning of at least its project to evacuate, to empty the population of Gaza City. It does not appear clear at all that they have any place to send them to any real uh accommodations or any decent um facilities for almost a million people who are now in Gaza City. Um and we have not been given more operational details. In fact, the chief of staff has yet to sign off on whatever these plans are, the details of the operation. and Prime Minister Netanyahu has scheduled for late late today uh security cabinet meeting to vote on them once they do have the authorization of the chief of staff. No, in the meantime, is there any response from Israel to that proposed ceasefire deal? You know, that’s a great question and I decided to look into it myself because the silence from Israel has become so perplexing. But the truth of the matter is that the Israeli government and Prime Minister Netanyahu himself have at no point said that they’re even reviewing this proposal that Hamas accepted uh at the beginning of this week. We’re now at the end of the week and the security cabinet meeting scheduled for tonight, the only item on its agenda is to approve the military plans, the plans for escalating the war. We have no indication that they will even discuss this um ceasefire or truce proposal. We have no indications that the ministers have even seen the document that they should be discussing. And so we’re in a situation in which it may in fact be the case that Israel will simply ignore that ceasefire. We we have no indications otherwise right now. Uh it’s been four or five days and the Israeli government’s concrete moves have only been towards escalating the war. Obviously we have to keep an eye on this and it could change. But right now it appears that the Israeli government is simply disregarding the ceasefire proposal that’s on the table. Noatanaposki reporting there from Jerusalem. Thank you.

Israel has called up 60,000 reservists to back its plan to seize Gaza City, where fighting continues. Meanwhile, mediators push for a truce, but Israel has yet to respond to Hamas’s latest ceasefire proposal, leaving public opinion divided and puzzled. FRANCE 24’s Noga Tarnopolsky has more from Jerusalem.

  1. Its funny.. why is isreal who was attacked obliged to provide food to it enemy.. accommodation..who does that.. it took the alied forces 9 months to dislodge 3000 isis members from falujr.. 9 whole months.. give isreal a break

  2. This is the most disgusting moment of human history in my life time. The Genova conventions, international law and human rights were invented to stop this behaviour. Netanyahu is spitting on human decency

  3. The mightiest and best equipped army in the region failed to achieve any of its war objectives after 22 months of fighting some poorly equipped gorilla fighters.
Clearly, Zl0NISTS picked the wrong people to steal their land.

  4. 140 hostages were recovered through ceasefire negotiations & 3 through force.

Israel chose to break that ceasefire deal, break humanity's trust, & has chosen to live by the sword.
This does not end well for Israel, for they can never find peace & security through brutality & the illegal occupation of Palestinian lands.
A sad day for humanity, & above all, a sad day for Israel.

  5. Hamas rejected when the same ceasefire offer was made earlier. So hamas is just playing another drama! It's just horrible for all those innocent civilians to go through all those bombardment again.

  6. The most effective move for Hamas now would be to try and capture some of the reservists. This would put huge emotional strain on the Israeli civil society. It could pave the way to peace negotiations.
