6 Reasons Not to Move to Ireland

    > I moved here on a whim

  2. “I associated Ireland with leprechauns, cute sayings, and stunning nature.”

Lol. Although to be honest the things the person is complaining about are the same things most of us already complain about.

  3. He lived somewhere else and doesnt like the place he moved to because its different, shocking…

    Also that opening paragraph, yikes.

  4. I think this piece highlights the Dublin city centre based multinational worker experience that’s very common. It can be like a bubble when you actually meet few people who live full time in Ireland and be surrounded by and socialise in a transient workforce that could literally be anywhere.

I met one person who’d lived between the canals for five years and had never been outside the M50 except for the airport. She said it was only when she moved out of that bubble that she actually made Irish friends and started feeling settled in.

I’d rename the piece reasons not to move to Dublin.

  5. I hope you let poor Margo know she was going to become the nemesis of a bunch of psychopaths on the r/ireland sub before you posted this.

  6. >Have to fly to anywhere else in Europe

Well it’s an island, what do you want us to do about it?

    >You should also be prepared for carpet in your kitchen and bathroom.

    Also, what?

  7. If she’d spent 5 minutes on this sub before she moved, she’d have been prepared for points 1, 3, 4, and 5. No. 2 should have been pretty evident by looking at a map, not sure what she expected there. I can only assume she moved here with basically zero research.

No. 6 sounds pretty specific to her circumstances. I’m sure it’s tough when people are moving on so quickly.

  8. Is this person seriously moaning that they can’t travel by rail around Europe from Ireland? Did she realise it was an island before moving? What a shit-show of an article.

  9. “I associated Ireland with leprechauns, cute sayings, and stunning nature.”

Really? Shes watched The Quiet Man too many times I think.

Just wait till she gets to France and sees they’re not all going round on bikes wearing Berets and selling onions. Her mind will be really blown then.

  10. I’d agree with the infrastructure and lack of social events. You go to other countries and there’s stuff on all the time, be it seasonal fairs, gigs etc. Infrastructure is abysmal in this country, especially when owning a car is becoming increasingly non viable.

  11. The author has another article from a week ago about the best cities in Europe. It’s all happy and positive until the final section where for some reason she says basically ‘Dublin isn’t one of these nice places’.

She really dislikes her time here and that’s completely fair (I share some of her issues) but she should’ve been a bit less naive before coming.

  12. >I did no research about this country and now I’m surprised it didn’t fit my fantasy!!

The smartest medium user in the world

  13. As someone who moved to Dublin from what can be considered a 3rd World country, none of these points are an issue. It’s a pretty entitled list. The polite thing to do is to quietly fuck off, some of us enjoy the drinking culture

  14. When I moved to Ireland a couple of years back I knew it is an island and I will have to fly or take a ferry. What did she think?

She is right with many points.

Still, I miss Ireland every day since I left. I miss the narrow streets, I miss a pint in a pub, just walking in, chatting for an hour with whoever is there drinking. I miss the people, the nature, the sheep … gosh, I would move back in a heartbeat if I could. Even into a place with carpet in the bathroom.

Maybe … we go back one day. Hopefully.

  15. Well we do have that new ferry, but it takes two days to get to Spain. You’ll lose almost a third of you two week holiday on it, so that’s not great.
