Crude oil inventories in the US fell by 2.392 million barrels to 418.3 million barrels in the week ended August 22, more than market expectations for a 2 million-barrel draw.
Also, crude stocks at the Cushing, Oklahoma, delivery hub decreased by 838,000 barrels last week.
Gasoline stocks fell by 1.2 million barrels to 222.3 million barrels, less than forecasts for a 2.5 million-barrel draw.
Distillate stockpiles, which include diesel and heating oil, fell by 1.8 million barrels to 114.2 million barrels, compared with expectations for a 1.1 million-barrel rise.
