Russia is beginning cooperation with North Korea in the field of geology, particularly in the search for uranium. The state-owned company Rosgeologiya, together with the Irkutsk National Research Technical University, is launching a program to train North Korean specialists.
This is reported by Russian media.
It is noted that the training program for specialists from the DPRK will be implemented under the auspices of the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources and the Federal Agency for Subsoil Use. The training will cover the field of solid minerals, and the North Korean trainees will visit the facilities of the Urangeologorazvodka company, the largest state-owned enterprise engaged in the search for uranium deposits.
According to Roman Kolesov, First Deputy Governor of the Irkutsk Region, the participation of North Korean specialists could strengthen regional cooperation with Pyongyang.
This initiative is worrisome, as the cooperation coincides with reports of significant progress in the DPRK’s nuclear program.
Earlier, journalists reported on a new facility in Yongbyon, similar to the uranium enrichment centers already known in Kangsong. IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi also confirmed that the scale of the new construction indicates a possible increase in Pyongyang’s nuclear capabilities.
In parallel, the US Congressional Research Service (CRS) revised its assessment of the DPRK’s nuclear arsenal. While back in 2023–2024 it was talking about 20–60 warheads, now it is talking about the possibility of manufacturing up to 90 units, of which about 50 may already be assembled.
Experts attribute this jump to technical support from Russia in exchange for supplying North Korean weapons and military resources for the war against Ukraine. Thus, the new educational program in Russia may become another tool for strengthening the DPRK’s nuclear ambitions, which exacerbates the security situation in the world.
By the way, Ukrainian intelligence has discovered that North Korea is continuously supplying Russia with huge amounts of ammunition — from artillery shells to ballistic missiles and multiple launch rocket systems, using sea, rail and air routes. Up to several million shells are supplied through just one targeted channel per month. At the same time, North Korea is planning to transfer up to 6,000 troops and equipment to Russia in the near future.
Recall that Donald Trump said that he would like to prepare a new Strategic Offensive Arms Reduction Treaty between the United States and Russia . Subsequently, China called the demands of the United States and Russia to join nuclear disarmament “unreasonable and unrealistic” .
