Russia’s Lavrov says peace deal must ensure its ‘security’ amid Ukraine talks • FRANCE 24 English

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday he hoped Russia’s Vladimir Putin would move forward on ending the war in Ukraine but conceded that the Kremlin leader may not want to make a deal at all, adding this would create a “rough situation” for Putin. Russia has made no explicit commitment to a meeting between Putin and Zelenskiy. Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday that Moscow did not reject any formats for discussing the peace process in Ukraine but any meeting of national leaders “must be prepared with utmost thoroughness”.

The expression used by Lavrov in his statements about "meetings between Ukraine and Russia," which "must be prepared with greater rigor," leads to two conclusions: – the Russia-US meeting took place without much protocol or "sufficient seriousness" on the part of the US, and therefore not sufficiently serious for Russia; – each meeting poses a risk to President Putin's life, certainly, despite the protective apparatus that ensures his safety. These meetings must have the necessary security for both sides; outside Russian territory, there is a risk of attacks, which is probably why President Putin made it clear in the last meeting, "the next meeting will be in Russia."
