  1. Nice. I have always wanted to book a train to pick me up from my house.

  2. > Quine said a Stratty to Paris train

The petition to ban timeout from r/London starts right now.

  3. Mildly optimistic this competition could force prices down.

  4. Are Uber ready to pay for the deployment of border force at Stratford?  It’s one reason why trains don’t stop there now except when Kings Cross is closed

  5. >it’s very quick and easy to get through. It’s going to be far less crowded,

Man’s never been to Stratford lol

  6. I’ll believe it when I see one running. Eurostar have been talking about this since I moved to London 10+ years ago, and well… Nothing.

At least Uber wants to use existing lines, eg existing infrastructure (Stratford might need an upgrade and there’s obviously the cost to hire British and French border control). All this ‘we’ll run trains to Cologne / Berlin’ whatever fails because the destinations don’t have the physical infrastructure, and sometimes not really the ability to *create* it.

  7. No way to turn the trains around at Stratford unless you swap the domestic platforms (2 and 3) with the international platforms (1 and 4), and significantly reconfigure the station.

And that’s before you get to the fact that Eurostar manage maybe 2 trains an hour from its five platforms at St Pancras; it will require quite some magic to manage a half decent frequency from two platforms at Stratford.

  8. Are they going to convert a fleet of grey import Toyota Prius’s to run on the tracks?

  9. So the app tells you that there’s a train in 2 minutes. You book the train, it then says looking for trains. After 3 minutes it finds a train in 4 minutes, after 8 minutes the train decides to cancel and it matches you with an other train.

  10. THe HS1 line appears to be desperately underused.

two euro train an hour – that leave within 5mins of each other.

then the odd HS1 to Margate.

Surely there should be a train on that line every – 5? mins?

  11. It will be very nice to get on / get off at Stratford rather than having to go the extra 7 minutes to St Pancras. Bit annoying always going past my apartment on the Eurostar, to then come back the other way on a javelin. Living and working between Paris and Stratford, so this is a regular thing for me. Fingers crossed.

  12. Where will thry put the border control? There isn’t a whole lot of space at Stratford from my experience

  13. Look I don’t run a train company but I’m amazed ebbsfleet isn’t a better bet

  14. Ubering a train would be pretty neat. I’ll let them sort out the details.

  15. Stratford finally getting its international moment, only took a couple decades and an Uber collab. Curious to see if this actually takes off.

  16. I wonder if their plans include stopping at Ebbsfleet and Ashford International again

  17. every few months theres a story about someone bringing new International Rail service and honestly its so boring at this point. Theres been endless years of these stories and I stopped getting my hopes up ages ago. I’ll believe it when I’m sat on a train that isn’t a Eurostar, and isn’t going to either Paris Brussels or Amsterdam.

    Just from memory we’ve had:
-Deutsche Bahn talk about running services
-Renfe talk about services to Paris (and maybe Barcelona?)
-National Express talk about starting some cringy rail service then the train supplier called them out for not ordering the trains yet
    -Veolia/Trenitalia
-SBB talk about trains to Geneva

The more I think about it the more irritated I get about how much talk there has been and how little action has been. Especially when they talk about the timescales of getting things going – 2030s for the most part lol. There is a myriad of technical bottlenecks (Channel Tunnel safety requirements, timetabling a fairly busy Tunnel, needing to order and build compliant train sets, restoring the facilities for border checks at Ashford, Ebbsfleet & Stratford) but the political and bureaucratic hurdles have to be the most frustrating. Not going to get too deep into it but just imagine if we stopped having sticks up our asses and were part of the Schengen Zone, that would solve a good chunk of the issues lol.
