  1. Like in Japan, which has some very dark history related to juvenile criminals…

    Absolutely necessary.

  2. Sure may as well, not like it’d change anything

  3. All the talk of feral teens by people who didn’t grow up as a teenager in the 80/90s

Ireland is much safer and by and large teens are very well behaved with some exceptions.

  4. I want a mother and child wing not toddlers running riot without sanction.

    /s (maybe)

  5. Yes another flaccid attempt at change.

Kids will get a slap on the wrist up to the age of 17 for anti-social behaviour. What difference (at all) does this make to the current situation.

  6. If politicians are so eager for the voting age to be lowered to 16, then we should also be lowering the prosecution age to 16.

  7. Criminal responsibility- Ya raise it to 14 years-but any damage created by a person between 9 and 18 years of age the parent/s are held financially liable.

  8. Surely this just incentivises grooming children into crime?

  9. Needs to be lowered so youths under the current age of criminal responsibility are made to answer for their crimes.

    Lower it to 11.

  10. This is so dumb. Criminal responsibility should be from the age of 8 from the way shuts going

  11. Sure what would you expect from The ~~Irish criminals union~~ Irish Council for Civil Liberties.

  12. All this does is raise the age of children that drug dealers will target to sell drugs because they can’t be prosecuted. This is an example of people with good intentions not understanding the unintended consequences of their actions. 12-14 year olds will be a significant improvement over the <12 year olds for drug distribution.

  13. There are kids as young as 12 going around on scooters in my area selling drugs. It’s time that we gave them more impunity. Great move.

  14. i mean its so arbitrary, under 10 would seem ridiculous but saying when or when someone is legally mature after that at standardized age is also kinda ridiculous.

Anything to do with law and set ages for things is always hugely flawed, voting, criminality, consent, driving…. its important to have them, but more flexible, case by case id say

  15. Urged by who? One group of nut jobs who oppose anything relating to the rule of law in this country

  16. Why don’t we just curfew (indoors by 11pm, no exceptions) all people under the age of 21.

No youths on the streets = no crime

  17. LOL … They’re comparing Ireland, with our chronic feral youth problem, with the likes of **ICELAND, DENMARK, NORWAY** … You give me Icelandic, Danish, Norwegian kids – and I’ll give you your law amendment.

But as long as we are living in Ireland, we need to curate our laws according to our cultural realities.

I’m so sick of NGOs peddling shite they’ve cherry picked from foreign nations, with their foreign cultures / societies / environments / weather, as if the entire human species and the environment generally is just this one homogeneous unit and there’s no unique cultural, social or environmental issues to account for from one nation to the next.

If anything we should be able to prosecute them as toddlers, and prosecute the parents & grandparents & 1st cousins too while we are at it.

When we don’t have a feral youth problem, we can engage in blue sky thinking.

  18. It should depend on the crime, if it’s a very severe crime , then don’t raise it.

  19. How about lowering it to 10.. Would help stem any potential issues sooner rather than later.

  20. > The NGO argues that such a move is required for Ireland to meet its obligations as a party to the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC).

why do we listen to this crap?

  21. Raise or lower. I thought basically anyone under 18 is untouchable. If by the time your 14 you don’t know the difference between right and wrong you never will. I know people make stupid mistakes separately to that.

  22. This just encourages gangs and shite parents to get kids to run riot. I’d say bring it down to 5. Can’t do the time…and so forth.

  23. Tempted to make a submission to the committee arguing against this.
This only serves to protect criminals and criminal gangs that use kids to skirt the law.

  24. I greatly disagree with this one. Children are altogether more mature than they were twenty years ago, the suggestion ‘they don’t know any better’ at twelve-years-old is ignorant to reality.

  25. Lower it and jail parents for their kids shitty behaviour too

  26. That’ll fix all that teen race violence I am reading about.

  27. This is literally the opposite of what needs to happen. It should be lowered not increased. Is this bill even enforced properly at its current stage.

  28. It should be raised even higher.

I’m from Sweden. We have 15 here.

A person below 15 who exhibit problematic behaviour, incl. problematic criminal behaviour, can be taken into compulsory care by the Swedish social service if there a ”high risk for damage to the person’s health or development”.
