Latest launch of SpaceX’s Starship successfully deploys 8 dummy satellites • FRANCE 24 English

Now, Elon Musk’s company SpaceX pulled off a successful test flight Tuesday of its newest generation Starship after two scrubbed launches in recent days. It’s a 10th test of a rocket that SpaceX and NASA hope will carry astronauts back to the moon. Wasim Con has more on this story from Los Angeles. There were cheers of joy at SpaceX headquarters for Starship’s first full and smooth flight. The next generation rocket is 123 m tall and the most powerful launch vehicle ever built. It could one day carry astronauts to the moon and even Mars if founder Elon Musk is to be believed. There were no crew on board this time around for this 10th test flight, but the rocket did carry eight dummy satellites. The rocket deployed those satellites once it was in space before splashing down into the Indian Ocean about an hour after launch. There was some concern at one point, however, that the extreme heat appears to have caused some damage to the rear flaps that uh that control the vehicle. No doubt that engineers will be working hard in the next few weeks and months to make those flaps more resilient. And the rocket booster called Superheavy also landed successfully, this time in the Atlantic Ocean. This is the first time that the Starship mission was completed successfully from uh launch to splashdown. And that is a major relief for the teams at SpaceX. After a year of mishaps and failed tests, the most recent test in May saw the spacecraft break apart. NASA has already ordered two of those Starships. The space agency hopes to use the vehicle to return astronauts to the moon by the end of the decade.
