A foreign leader on Thursday made a shocking claim against Donald Trump: the American president is a “Russian asset.”
Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the president of Portugal, made the bombshell allegation while speaking at a youth training event in his country.
De Sousa said Trump is behind a new political leadership style centered on emotions.
“[T]he top leader of the world’s foremost superpower is, objectively, a Soviet or Russian asset. He operates as an asset,” de Sousa said, according to the Portugal Pulse.
Trump’s foreign policy, the Portuguese president said, is unorthodox.
Russia is benefiting from the president’s approach to the war in Ukraine, de Sousa claimed.
“I am stating that, objectively, the new American leadership has strategically benefited the Russian Federation,” he said, according to the Pulse.
Trump had been criticized for hosting a summit in Alaska with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Critics said Trump was giving legitimacy to Russia, which sparked the war by invading Ukraine.
There is no evidence that Trump is a Russian agent, but former FBI official Andrew McCabe, whom Trump fired during his first term, said Trump’s behavior opens him up to that possibility.
“I don’t know that I would characterize it as [an] active, recruited, knowing asset in the way that people in the intelligence community think of that term,” McCabe said in 2024, according to The Guardian.
“But I do think that Donald Trump has given us many reasons to question his approach to the Russia problem in the United States, and I think his approach to interacting with Vladimir Putin, be it phone calls, face-to-face meetings, the things that he has said in public about Putin, all raise significant questions.”
