PELHAM, AL (WBMA) — The City of Pelham has scheduled a public hearing on September 8th at 7 p.m. to consider revoking Mi Pueblo Supermarket’s business license. The grocery store has been in the city for two decades. Pelham released the following statement on the hearing.

“The City has an obligation to its citizens to ensure that the laws and ordinances of the City and the State of Alabama are followed by all of the City’s citizens, both individual and corporate. When an entity in Pelham is not in compliance with the laws and ordinances of the City or the State, City staff works diligently to assist those entities to make sure they are in compliance. The city has communicated fairly and diligently with the entity on the steps necessary to achieve compliance. At the point that the City’s assistance is no longer effective, the City follows state law in addressing the non-compliance. These laws and ordinances are enforced fairly, equitably, and uniformly for the benefit of all businesses, citizens and residents of Pelham.”“Mi Pueblo has been a very successful fixture in our community for 20 years. That notwithstanding, the City has a responsibility to apply laws and ordinances fairly and uniformly. The business is well aware of the issues here that need to be resolved, as the City has been in communication with them both before and after the notice was issued. They may comment on those issues if they choose. Section 40-2A-10 of the Code of Alabama prohibits the City from disclosing any additional taxpayer information at this time. The public hearing is the designated time to properly disclose and provide testimony of any additional information serving as the basis for the hearing and for the business to respond.

No specific reason for the consideration of revoking the business license has been given. Pelham added a meeting is set between it and the supermarket to resolve the issue potentially before the public hearing. Mi Pueblo posted to social media after the news of hearing became public.

For over 20 years, Mi Pueblo has been part of this community as a local, family-owned business, and our commitment to you remains strong. We’re working hand in hand with the city to move forward and continue to be that place where families gather, enjoy and celebrate together for many years to come. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for your support.
