LAMAR COUNTY, Miss. (WDAM) – Congressman Mike Ezell is speaking out about the shooting in Minneapolis Wednesday that left two children dead and 17 injured.
“(It’s) absolutely terrible when we see these things happen around the country,” Ezell said.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed sympathy for those who died and also called for action on gun control.
But, Ezell (R-4th District) said tragic incidents like the one in Minneapolis are more about mental illness then about guns.
“I think it’s more of a mental health thing than anything else,” Ezell said.
“There’s always various reasons why these things happen, no particular reason other than people get things in their mind, they focus on them and they commit these terrible crimes.”
Ezell attended a luncheon in Lamar County Thursday that raised money for his 2026 re-election campaign for Congress.
The event was hosted by businessmen Thomas and Jim Duff.
During the event, Ezell also said he supported President Donald Trump’s efforts to fire Federal Reserve Governor Lisa Cook.
Cook has filed a court challenge to remain in her position.
“I do believe the president has the authority,” Ezell said. “He is a businessman. What he does, works. He’s very successful. He knows what he’s doing and I’m in full support of the president in this matter.”
Ezell will return to Washington next Tuesday.
Congress has been on summer recess for the last few weeks.
