It is diffusion of responsibility on a certain level.

There used to be a meme similar to this that said
Prayer: How to pretend you’re doing something when you’re not doing anything at all.
Isn’t this exactly the same as ‘sending good vibes’?
For some reason, people get so pissy when I politely decline their offer of magical spell casting.
I’ll talk to my imaginary friend about you.
“The man who prays is the one who thinks that god has arranged matters all wrong, but who also thinks that he can instruct god how to put them right.”

Pretty sure that 90% of the people that say they’re praying for someone don’t even actually say any actual prayers for that purpose.
It’s literally less effort than sending a text and most don’t even care enough to put out that much effort.
Ricky G nailing it once again If ‘I’ll pray for you’ had a truth serum, this would be it! Let’s actually start stepping up instead of stepping back with just a phrase. Thoughts and prayers are the ‘read’ receipts of support, change my mind.
Sometimes people will say something akin to “If there’s anything you need, just ask”. The expectation is pretty much always that you won’t ask and never require them to actually do anything so call them out on it. Ask them for a favor, something small but annoying to do. See how they react.
When shit really goes bad, having someone say ‘Ill pray for you,’ doesnt hit the way they intend. Im not religious so maybe I dont get ‘it.’
They may as well just be saying you are completely fucked and shit is hopeless.
They are not offering to help or assistance, physical or monetary. They are not even offering up their time to provide comfort.
The times in my life someone has said that to me sincerely, I wanted to tell them to get fucked.
Most of them don’t even pray, just type out thoughts and prayers and never think about it again
Thoughts and prayers are like sending an email to spam, you feel like you did something, but nobody’s actually reading it.
