Latvia emerged as victors 72:70, but only gained the ascendancy in the third quarter of the match after Estonia led during the earlier stages.
Kristaps Porziņģis was the leading scorer for the Latvian team with 26 points, while Rihards Lomažs added nine points.
The Latvian national team has now won one and lost one in two games, and in the remaining three matches in the group, the first task will be to secure participation in the round of 16.
But that will not be an easy task on this showing, particularly wth the next game being againsta strong Serbia on August 30th, followed by Portugal on September 1st, and the Czech Republic on September 3rd. The four best teams in the sox-team group will advance to the round of 16.
The group stages of the European Championship final tournament feature 24 teams divided into four groups, playing a round-robin tournament in Riga, Tampere, Katowice and Limassol. The top four teams from each group will advance to the knockout stages, which will be held in Rīga. The European champions will be decided on September 14th.
