August the 30th, 2025 – A law to finally place a proper limit on Croatian taxi prices is apparently on the cards following countless complaints of scams and rip offs.

As Poslovni Dnevnik writes, Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure Oleg Butković recently announced the launch of amendments to the Road Transport Act. That will limit Croatian taxi prices to the maximum. The move follows media reports of people, particularly tourists, being ripped off by taxi drivers all over the country.

He expressed plenty of concern about the extremely high charges passengers were charged when using taxis across the country, emphasising the need to introduce criteria for determining prices and place a proper limit on Croatian taxi prices and an end to scammers.

“We will sit down and really work out what we need to do in this regard and how we should best approach it all. We need to place limits but we can’t risk it becoming a job that nobody will do anymore, which might happen if the prices are set too low. We have to assess all that carefully,” said Minister Butković, emphasising the need to balance the availability of the service and the protection of the interests of drivers.

In addition to introducing a proper limit on Croatian taxi prices, the Ministry of Transport is also currently considering the introduction of special license plates for taxis. “In many cases, people performing services as a taxi don’t have their vehicles properly marked at all. Some of them don’t even have a sign stating that they are taxis. In the proposal, we will work with the Ministry of the Interior (MUP) to introduce proper license plates for taxis, so they will be very clearly marked,” Butković announced.

In addition, the Minister announced the stricter supervision and rules for applications that connect drivers and passengers, with the aim of increasing transparency and safety across the taxi sector. These changes are part of a broader reform of road transport legislation that the Ministry is actively preparing in order to properly modernise and regulate the market.

The announced changes have often been welcomed as necessary to protect consumers, as well as to maintain the sustainability of the taxi industry within the currently very dynamic market conditions.
