40,000 jobs at risk as foreign pupils shun UK language schools – Sector faces ‘devastation’ by Brexit red tape and from pandemic

  1. “More things happen that were predicted as a result of Brexit”

“Nothing to do with Brexit…Covid/Ukraine, init?”

  2. Schools in the UK are generally over priced. Especially if you consider prices In Europe. The only country which has a more expensive system is the USA

  3. Brexit has devastated the EFL sector. I said this years ago during the referendum but no-one listened. There are a number of academies I’ve done work with that have been forced to close because they just cannot sustain their numbers any more

  4. this must be where boris is getting most of the people for the 50,000 new nurses he’s going to magic up out of thin air

  5. Not sure it’s the end of the world. These language centers paid absolute peanuts to people who were good quality teachers. Why not go to Thailand or Vietnam and enjoy your summer whilst teaching a summer camp rather than making minimum wage in expensive cities for the summer. In Vietnam you can make 20 quid an hour teaching English after tax and your money gets your far more.

  6. I have worked at these language schools which pop up in the summer. It’s not great for campus universities who make money from them in the summer holidays as they rent their buildings and student accomodation. We had 500 kids each week which is a lot of money and a lot of kids.

And bus and tour companies that we used to do group bookings with and also the students who were employed by these companies that only wanted a summer job or didn’t have anywhere to live during the summer.

  7. I have insight on this as my mum teaches English to foreign students, its mainly because everything has moved onto online learning

  8. You do all know that this is also because the gov has massively cracked down on phoney language schools that were effectively a route for migrants to game the system.

    Nice to see balanced reporting.

  9. I always read The Guardian for balanced journalism, that fairly reports all the data. There is never another point-of-view on things like the digital transformation of remote learning over the last 2 years. Boris is such a BASTARD!!!! Vote Labour.

  10. My school went to Hastings each year for a week with about 80 to 100 8th graders. They stayed in families and we all had a very nice time.

2019 was the last trip. 2020 we had to cancel because of Covid, 21 the same and now the passport stuff is prohibitive. Around a quarter of our kids don’t have EU passports. Some even don’t have passports but only refugee papers. Before Brexit we just made a list with names and ID-details.

Now we are looking into options in Ireland.

And we are not the only school here which had such a program.

  11. It’s even simple issues like not accepting ID cards anymore that cause big hurdles, I’m a Pole, living in the UK and wanted my family to visit now as the Covid travel restrictions were lifted in both countries- most of my family don’t have passports as they usually go on holidays to Europe so don’t need anything but IDs, my family will get their passports for me, it’s still a massive headache as people applied in droves for their passports due to the war in Ukraine, other people without any family connection just won’t bother with the UK, especially as Ireland is much more welcoming.

I have also noticed that people without leave to remain were fingerprinted at the border, despite my English fiancee not being subject to this kind of treatment when entering the Schengen zone. I’m sure Priti Patel is really happy deep down in her rotten evil heart.

  12. This is such a waste. I worked in a language school for adults and the students that come spend lots of money while also often working part time jobs in cafes and the like. In other words, they’re very good for the local economy.

  13. One word: good.
This is long time coming ever since they trebled university fees for local students in 2010 but delivered the same shitty education that is at times so far removed from real-life work.
Guess what? International students faced the same shitty experience, except we paid even more to go through it.
