Lord Hennessy said Mr Johnson’s decision not to resign showed “complete and utter disdain for the decency of our constitutional conventions”.
He also criticised ministers defending his conduct on the airwaves and their use of the situation in Ukraine to argue there should not be a leadership contest now by saying they “cannot ignore the decency of your own system”.
He said: “The Queen’s First Minister is now beyond doubt a rogue prime minister, unworthy of her, her Parliament, her people, and her kingdom.
“I cannot remember a day when I have been more fearful for the well-being of the constitution.
“It’s an assault on not just the decent state of mind which keeps our society open and clean but also on the institutions of the state.
“If he’s not prepared to do the decent thing… why should anybody else behave decently and properly? The whole decency of our public life turns on this question.”
I don’t see how it’s a constitutional crisis.
Firstly, it’s not like it’s a criminal conviction for an existing crime. It’s not like he’s mugged the Queen, blimey.
Secondly, he’s paid the fine. So he has been punished for the alleged law breaking. And let’s be honest, if he wasn’t PM he probably wouldn’t have been punished.
Thirdly, his constitutional position is not “law maker”. Parliament makes laws. His constitutional position is First Lord of the Treasury, which is not undermined by somebody giving him birthday cake.
Of course it is – I’m honestly shocked it’s taken this long for anyone to say this.
Boris is now objectively the worst prime minister in history – we all knew the Coronavirus Enquiry was going to tank his legacy, but he’s managed to fumble it well before that by not only breaking the laws he came up with and enacted himself, but then lied to the house about it, breaking its most fundamental rule in the process.
If a PM’s word cannot be trusted, he isn’t fit for purpose – promising things is most of what he does.
The only reason he’s still in office at present is that the Tory party is so rotten to the core that they don’t have a better alternative. And what does that tell you.
The man who illegally prorogued parliament has no respect for the constitution of democracy? Say it ain’t so! If lying to the Queen did not facilitate a leadership contest and a constitutional crisis, Partygate won’t either. Johnson won’t leave until he chooses to, he will not let things he sees as pointless, such as the law, change that.
I knew Boris was a grifting anti vaxxer when he decided NOT to roll out the passport system, a disgrace that is taking lives and killing grandma’s. Truly a mass murderer.
You cant have a constitutional crisis if you dont have a true codified constitution.
“broken the law”, “misled Parliament” and “shredded the ministerial code.” He doesn’t care, the government doesn’t care. we transitioned to a Totalitarian state as soon as lockdown started.
30 years ago most of that front bench would have resigned over the course of the last two years and a good number just over this single incident. The only thing they represent now is corruption. Even Thatcher had more common decency than these arseholes.
I think the hysterical reaction from the Boris haters is the most pathetic thing I have ever seen the left of our country do. Not the most contemptable. That was them trying overturn Brexit and subvert democracy.
So this historian thinks Boris having to pay a £50 fine over a cake being out on his table is a “constitutional crisis” LMFAO they have gone mad.
