Any idea what was actually said about Mary Lou on RTE?
Fearing for their jobs when Sinn Fein get into government
I really don’t like this new “sue everyone who says anything about us” approach by SF to stop anyone from talking about them.
Sinn Fein aren’t exactly bastions of goodness and honesty themselves.
The fact is that Mairia Cahill was raped repeatedly as a child by someone in SF, SF threatened her and covered it up, and Mary Lou McDonald went on tv multiple times – knowing that Mairia was telling the truth – to discredit Mairia and her story.
Other prominent SF reps took to Twitter calling her a “lying bitch” and a “stupid bitch” in a concerted campaign by SF to silence her.
Google “Mairia Cahill Sinn Fein Twitter” for a taste of the concerted abuse campaign they laid on her.
This is quite recently. This isn’t “the troubles” or whatever.
Channel 4 did a documentary about the case and the ensuing attempts by SF to cover this and other cases up.
Edit: just 3 years ago, Mairia wanted to run for election but the PSNI determined that it wasn’t safe for her to run because her address would be on the ballot paper.
3. Years. Ago.
What do Mick Wallace and Clare Daly have to do with this? Strange to mention them in the article.
>Ms McDonald’s defamation action against RTÉ is part of a growing trend by Sinn Féin figures to use the courts against what they believe to be false claims made by political opponents and members of the media.
He says this like it’s a bad thing, should they just allow the media to defame them without consequence?
Wonder how much of the settlement is being donated to the party?

>Last year the Sinn Féin TD Donnchadh Ó Laoghaire settled a High Court action for defamation against RTÉ for a sum believed to be in excess of €150,000 after a discussion on Liveline.
Maybe it’s a growing trend for them to sue RTÉ because RTÉ keep lying about them, and admitting it?
*”Well Hello Mary Lou, Goodbye Cash”*
In 2021 we ranked 12th in the world for press freedom. I wonder will we slip down the ranks with all these SF lawsuits.
RTE is the new Fox news
Pay your TV license tho folks.
It being RTÉ I expect they’ll win on account of RTÉ spewing absolute bullshit as its a national disservice and should be shut down regardless of there being an alternative or not.
They lost the run of themselves when they hired Claire Byrne, all anger and no substance just like the people on Fox News, empty vessels for shipping vague bullshit and getting angry about it. Getting flustered on the television does not make it journalism or holding people to account.
I’m old enough to remember Mary Hearny getting 450,000 from Newstalk for defamation.
I’ve know a journalist in RTE and they tell me they are all shitting bricks the whole time that they might be sued by a politician, a business person, whatever Conor McGregor is, or whatever. And now we have Daly and Wallace, plus McDonald, suing RTE – it has huge ramifications for the journalists involved.
You have to wonder how much stuff is never reported or is hushed up for this reason. I’d love to know, for example, what would be reported about Dennis O’Brien if our defamation laws were not so strict.
